Mike completed a full career in the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) as a Senior Special Agent with over 22 years of successful experience in global law enforcement, protection, emergency management, high profile federal/state fraud and cybercrime investigations, having served multiple assignments in Chicago, IL, Washington D.C., and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mike held a Top Secret (SCI) Security Clearance. Mike has also proudly served as a St. Paul, MN Police Officer and in the field of retail Loss Prevention with several different major retail companies.
Mike initiated, led, and directed multiple complex federal and state fraud and electronic crime investigations involving transnational and local organized crime groups. Mike developed the strategy and managed investigations as the U.S. Secret Service supervisor of the MN Financial and Electronic Crimes Task Force. Mike also has significant experience with employee related investigations, as well as, screening and interviews which impacted employment decisions. Mike has been trained in the areas of implicit bias and mental illness, especially as they pertain to employment related interviews, and interviews of persons involved in threatening behavior.
Mike has led and/or played an active role in countless protective advance security assessments involving the technical and physical security for venues and locations associated with the President, Vice President, and other VIPs and world leaders. Mike served as a supervisor in the Operations Section of the Vice-Presidential Protection Division with responsibility for the overall daily security logistics and planning of the Vice President and his family’s global schedule. In addition, Mike has participated in and/or led protective intelligence investigations involving real or implied threats to protected individuals.
Most recently, Mike was the Director of Investigations for Computer Forensic Services in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with additional responsibility for governance, risk and compliance topics, information and physical security assessments, and cyber investigations. He has been involved in physical and information security assessments for a wide variety of clients to include; hospitals, schools, businesses, places of worship, private residences, government clients, and individuals.
In 2022, Mike helped co-found a MN-based non-profit named “Campus Safety Coalition” with a mission to create safe university and college campuses throughout the United States for all stakeholders, including students, employees, and the general public. Mike also serves on the board for the Financial Retail Protection Association (FRPA). Mike has previously served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Organized Retail Crime Association (MNORCA) and is a member of; the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators (IAFCI), the MN Association of Private Investigators & Protective Agents (MAPI), the United States Secret Service Association (USSSA), and partnered with the U.S. Secret Service Cyber Fraud Task Force (CFTF). Mike is also a proud member of ASIS International.
Mike received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. Mike also graduated from the Criminal Investigator Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, GA, and Special Agent Training at the U.S. Secret Service James J. Rowley Training Center in Beltsville, Maryland and Washington, District of Columbia. Mike has taken numerous courses throughout his career including in the areas of; cybercrime, bank fraud, organized crime, asset seizure & forfeiture, protective intelligence, information security and network intrusion Wicklander & Zulawski Interview/Interrogation and Reid and Associates interviewing. Mike is certified as both an ISO27001 Information Security Management System (ISMS) Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor.
Mike has received many career distinctions, recognitions, and awards for his work in loss prevention, leadership, and law enforcement, including; the St. Paul Police Department’s Top Gun award, Medal of Valor, and Chiefs Award; a Public Service Award from the National Security Section of the U.S. Department of Justice; Recognition Awards from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Office of Transnational Issues, U.S. Treasury Office of Terrorist Finance & Financial Crimes, and U.S. Bureau of Engraving & Printing; Investigator of the Year, 1st Runner-up from the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators (IAFCI); Commendation Certificates from Wells Fargo and US Bank for work in a major bank fraud and organized crime investigation; the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Award for Excellence in Criminal Investigation, 2nd Runner-Up; numerous Awards from the U.S. Secret Service, Criminal Investigative Division’s Asset Forfeiture Branch; the National Retail Federation (NRF) Law Enforcement Retail Partnership Award; the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Minnesota (USAO-MN) Law Enforcement Officer Exceptional Service Award, and many others that Mike also credits the incredible collaborative public and private sector teams along with whom he has had the privilege to serve.
